New York City 2026
24 miles
around Manhattan
On Saturday 26 September we walk the entire waterfront of Manhattan in a single day. We start at Battery Park at 7:00 in the morning, head north up the Hudson, cross the top of the island under the George Washington Bridge, and come back down the East River. Twelve hours later we finish where we started and celebrate what we raised. It is not a race. You walk at your own pace, and roughly every three hours we stop for something: breathwork, a walking meditation, a picnic, a silent disco, DJs to lift the energy when you need it most. Every walker raises money for Justdiggit, an NGO that regreens dry and degraded land in Kenya and Tanzania to help cool down the planet. Since 2021 our walkers have donated over $267,000 and permanently regreened more than 530 football fields of land. Just $12 regreens 1,335 square feet.

The route, and whether you can actually do it
One lap of the Manhattan waterfront. Battery Park, up the Hudson, under the George Washington Bridge, back down the East River. 24 miles, 39 kilometres, about twelve hours including every stop.
Almost certainly yes, you can do this. If you can walk for an afternoon, you can do this. Twenty-four miles sounds like a lot because you are picturing running it. You are not running it. You walk at a normal pace for a long time, with a break roughly every three hours.
You do not need to train, though it helps. If you do one thing, take a four-hour walk a couple of weekends before. Not for fitness, but to find out what your shoes do to your feet after four hours. That is what training for this actually is.
You will not be left behind. Someone from our team walks at the back of the group all day. Nobody walks alone. We also bring cargo bikes you can sit in.
You can stop. The route follows the waterfront and is never far from a subway. If you need to get off at mile 15, you get off at mile 15, and you still raised the money and you still walked further than you thought you would.
What to bring. Shoes you have already walked in, and this is the single most important line on this page: do not wear new shoes. Layers, because late September in New York is cold at 7:00 AM, warm by lunch and cold again at the finish. Snacks, a small backpack, a refillable water bottle, and blister tape you put on before you feel anything rather than after. Worth adding: sunscreen, sunglasses, a cap, anti-chafe balm, a power bank, a rain jacket and your ID.
Not walking? Come find us. We follow a published route with published times, so you can join us for any stretch of it. Walk a mile, walk six, walk the last four into the finish at Battery Park. No ticket, no sign-up, no cost. Look at the route, pick a point, show up.
Why we walk
This summer Soho flooded twice. Canadian wildfire smoke turned the New York skyline red. The city counted more excessive heat days than in any year before. Climate change is here and it is affecting all of us. There is still something we can do about it. When you bring nature back to dry, degraded land, the land holds water again, plants return, and the ground cools. Justdiggit does this across Kenya and Tanzania, together with local farmers, at scale. Every dollar we raise brings nature back permanently. Just $12 regreens 1,335 square feet. Every walker gets a personal fundraising page. You set a target, you share it with the people who know you, and they back you. Better still, get them to walk part of the route with you. We suggest aiming for $1,000 as a minimum. Last year in New York, 44 walkers raised more than $53,000 between them, an average of over $1,200 each. Our fundraising platform runs in euros because we started out in Amsterdam. Dollar donations and US credit cards work normally. 24 The Planet is run by Stichting The Greater Good and staffed entirely by volunteers. Nobody takes a salary. Everything we raise, minus the cost of running the day, goes to Justdiggit.
